This week we are not sharing a new way to upcycle, repair or rewear your old shirt; but a different way of looking at ownership. We’re diving a little bit into borrowing clothes! At FOR KEEPS we are all about reuse, so what if you are not the owner of all your things. What if you use items together? One of the ways to do that is a clothing library. So we went to visit one of the clothing libraries close to Utrecht, Wauwcloset, and had a short interview with the founder, Hanh!
How did you start Wauwcloset?
In the past I had my own women’s clothing wholesale company for over ten years, which was part of the fast fashion industry. New collections from Asia and Europe arrived almost every week. Over the years I learned how polluting and disastrous the fashion industry, with its insatiable need to continuously renew itself, is for our planet.
In search of how I could make the clothing industry more sustainable, in addition to working at the Sustainability Department of Rabobank, where I organized Circular Economy Challenges, I also researched how to make sustainable textiles. For example, you can make textiles from milk that is no longer drinkable. It was only after a visit to a laundry fair in Milan that the idea arose to apply the knowledge of the laundry industry to the fashion industry.
Also helped by the cleaning expertise that my husband and his cousin have from their own laundry Vendrig IJsselstein, which has been renting and cleaning company clothing for more than 60 years.
In het verleden heb ik meer dan tien jaar lang mijn eigen dameskleding groothandel gehad die onderdeel van de fast fashion industrie was. Bijna elke week kwamen nieuwe collecties uit Azië en Europa binnen. Door de jaren heen heb ik pas geleerd hoe vervuilend en desastreus de mode industrie, met haar onverzadigbare behoefte om zich continue te vernieuwen, is voor onze planeet.
Op zoek naar hoe ik de kledingindustrie zou kunnen verduurzamen, heb ik naast het werken bij de Duurzaamheidsafdeling van de Rabobank, waar ik Circulaire Economie Challenges organiseerde, ook onderzocht hoe je duurzaam textiel kunt maken. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld textiel maken uit melk die niet meer drinkbaar is. Pas na een bezoek aan een wasserij beurs in Milaan ontstond het idee de kennis van de wasserij industrie toe te passen op de modeindustrie.
Daarbij hielp ook de reinigingsexpertise die mijn man en zijn neef hebben vanuit hun eigen wasserij Vendrig IJsselstein, die al meer dan 60 jaar bedrijfskleding verhuurt en reinigt.
How do you see the future of fashion?
The future fashion market needs a fashion revolution. Women will then no longer own all their clothes and will not buy new clothes every time they want to wear something else. By having a small, unique basic capsule of clothing at home and supplementing it with rental items that fit the need that the woman has at that moment, they need much less clothing. With the right clothes for the right occasion, women have the look they want. Thanks to this sustainable system, women will burden the earth as little as possible and will feel good about it.
De toekomstige modemarkt heeft een moderevolutie nodig. Vrouwen zullen dan niet meer al hun kledingstukken in eigen bezit hebben en niet telkens nieuwe kleding kopen als ze weer iets anders willen dragen. Door thuis een kleine unieke basis capsule aan kleding te hebben en deze aan te vullen met huurstukken die passen bij de behoefte die de vrouw op dat moment heeft, hebben ze veel minder kledingstukken nodig. Met de juiste kleding voor de juiste gelegenheid hebben vrouwen de uitstraling die ze willen. Vrouwen zullen door dit duurzame systeem de aarde zo min mogelijk belasten en zich daar goed bij voelen.
