Meet the maker | Shirt #18 – Sophie from Silent Wave Indigo

The most sustainable shirt is the one already in your closet. So upcycle, repair, rewear that shirt. Boring? Not at all. We will show you 100 ways to make your old shirt ready for a new party! We call it the #100greenstatements project. We started half a year ago and every week we are collaborating with new artists or designers who are creating, repairing, styling their t-shirts. Can’t wait to see what they will make. And of course, we are curious: What is their story?

This week in the spotlight is Sophie, from Silent Wave Indigo. She is a fashion designer and makes very graphic illustartions on denim. We talked about making 100 green statements, and she was up for a challenge. So getting curious, what she will make!

Can you tell us a little bit about you?

I’m Sophie, proud founder of the brand Silent Wave Indigo. I’m a French fashion designer based in Amsterdam with a true passion for denim. I love finding new ways to work this rough material through upcycling old jeans, giving them the second life they deserve and creating one of a kind and sustainable products. All of my designs are embroidered by hand, no machines involved! Insuring something unique and 100% personal. I draw my inspiration from nature and the realm of legends and mythology, giving my designs a spiritual vibe.

How did you start your business?

Officially I started my business last year during corona, I was driven to give life to all the ideas roaming in my head. It was certainly a challenging time to start, but it quickly became both rewarding and fulfilling!
Unofficially, the idea to reuse old jeans to turn them into new design and embellishing them through embroideries and such came to me 3 years ago. I was offered some « waste » out of a denim supplier, some jeans that were not commercialized because of small defects and were meant to be thrown out. That’s when I saw this creative opportunity which then grew to be Silent Wave Indigo today.

What are your dreams?

I want to offer people a unique feeling though my designs, as well as something out of the ordinary and sustainable. Something that is truly theirs. I guess my dream would be to be able to continue doing this for as long as I can!
