This week we are joined by Abalonia, the designer and maker behind the brand RE.CUT. It is a sustainable slow fashion brand making clothing and accessories. The pieces are fun and colourful and made in an asymmetrical patchwork style. At RE.CUT nothing gets thrown out.
How did you start your business & How do you see the future of fashion?
I started this brand as a way to use fabric scraps I had saved over years of sewing. Now everything I create is made using fabric offcuts and second hand clothing. I want to show the possibilities of fabrics and clothes that some people no longer see worth in.
The mass production of clothes from fast fashion companies is so damaging for our planet. These clothes are trend based and not made to last, a lot are thrown out after only a few wears. We need to move away from these volume based business models and towards a circular fashion model. This means making garments with a focus on longevity and quality, also using materials with a low impact that can eventually be repurposed.
What is the statement you want to make?
The statement I want to make with RE.CUT is that every little piece of fabric has the potential to become something great. I want to move away from trends and focus on making one of a kind pieces that will last. I want to create clothing that will make you feel great when you put it on.
The ‘Harlequin’ sweatshirt is made using entirely upcycled fabrics. I sourced second hand hoodies in charity shops and took them apart. I drew the design and chose where the colours would go in the pattern, I then cut the pieces making optimal use of the fabrics. Once all the pieces in the pattern were cut I stitched them together using my machines. I like to topstitch the seams to keep clean flat lines, I feel this really adds to the quality of the piece. Due to the limited nature of upcycled fabrics my designs are always changing and evolving as I go but this means that each piece is truly unique.

I do offer commissions. I offer custom sizing and colour choices. I have already done quite a few custom Bumbags and some other items too.
